Who is Your Support System?
Do you have someone that tells you that you’re doing a good job as a parent? Who do you bounce your concerns off of?
Do you have a friend that you can count on? Do you talk with that person?
Are you co-parenting your children? Does your co-parent support you or pull you down?
Don’t parent alone. You need a support system. There needs to be adults in your life that you share your experiences with.
The contentment you get from raising your children is not enough. No matter how mature and intelligent your kiddos might be, they are not capable of being your sounding board.
Seek out people who share similar experiences as you do. If you live in the city and work in a law office, find someone that can relate to your experience of preparing and submitting briefs. If you have multiple children, find someone else that understands constant fighting for who will be on top. Call an old friend that has children. Listen to and share with co-workers in the break room.
If that doesn’t help, find someone who has a completely different parenting experience than you. If you work 60 hours a week, then talk with a SAHM. The ideas you receive might be outside of your “box”, but could be just the nugget of advice that will resolve an issue that you’ve been struggling with for weeks.
Get on a blog or forum and listen to other people’s concerns. It won’t be long until someone hits on one of yours.
You will immediately feel validated, understood, and appreciated when you find someone that shares your same experiences. If you don’t, find a different support system until you find one that works for you.
It takes a village to raise a child.
Don’t just take from your support system. Prop up the other person as well. Just because she seems to have it all together doesn’t mean that is actually the case. We all have our weak moments.
