Introduction to a World of Chaos and Epic Failures
What is chaos? According to Merriam-Webster, chaos is a state of utter confusion. I don’t know about you, but for me, chaos has always been my Achille’s heel. I love order, predictability, and structure. Sadly, my children are none of those things.
I wish I enjoyed sporadic food fights, leaving my home after dark, and swinging from the ceiling fan, but I don’t. Actually, I don’t wish I enjoyed those things. The thought just gave me hives.
The other night, my son asked, “Mommy, why do you let us do fun stuff sometimes and say no the rest of the time?”
Lack of Energy
My response? Well, my answer is threefold. I rarely have the energy for those “fun” activities that my kids do. Take, for example, making Valentine’s cards for their classmates. What starts off as a cute idea in my head soon turns into a giant pile of candy, cards, stickers, arguments over who’s going to take what, and random jewelry being put into envelops for my daughter’s best friend.
Why envelopes? Because the first envelope, she forgot to put something in it. The second time was because I thought her best friend was a different girl and addressed it to the wrong name. Oops. And the last time was finally the perfect combination of gift, envelope, and name. But who the hell knows who she gave it to?
The second reason? The second reason is that I want my kids to learn anticipation and the pleasure of getting to do fun things every once in a while. This helps to reduce the potential for my children to become entitled. Bullshit! It’s really reason #1. I don’t have the energy to be chaotic and fun all the time.
The last reason? Reason number three is that I want them to practice discipline and disappointment. Again, this is really reason #1.
Teaching Important Lessons
Does that make me an epic failure as a mom? Nope. That makes me a good mom that is teaching anticipation, gratitude, appreciation, and a lack of entitlement. These are all great lessons for my children to learn, and all at the hands of my lack of energy.
They’ll thank me for it later.
